Advocacy
Bike advocacy is one of the most important things that cyclists and non-cyclists can do to push for street-design that is pleasant for everyone. We want to do more in the field of advocacy work, but we need YOUR help to do it!
Why is bike infrastructure important?
The PN2K Memorial Foundation has worked extensively on making the cyclist safer (endowing more knowledge, providing MIT resources, holding basic bike repair training workshops, holding numerous safety events with free bike repairs, providing low-cost helmets and gear, etc.); however, cyclists can only be as safe as the roads on which they bike. Would you feel safe driving on poorly designed roads that lacked STOP signs? Would you feel safe walking in traffic lanes if there were no sidewalks? Similarly, don't expect cyclists to feel safe biking without protected lanes (and certainly don't expect parents to let their kids bike to places if there is little thought behind building family-friendly biking infrastructure).
"We're banding together in solidarity to make the streets safer"
Bike advocacy is a vast field. Be consoled that there are organizations and individuals out there pushing to make biking infrastructure safer every day, but bicyclists are in the minority, and that needs to change. Here are some faces of bicyclists who want to see that change happen: they are wearing their PN2K wristbands in our solidarity movement, "Banding Together."
PN2K wristbands can be obtained by attending our bike events. All annual paying PN2K Members are entitled to a free wristband. If you have a photo of yourself that you want to see up on the wall, please send it to pn2kmit-officers.
